A STUDY TOUR TO THE ICPC AND EFCC OF NIGERIAICPC OF NIGERIA REGARD KACC AS A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN THE EASTERN AFRICA REGION
The Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission builds the capacities of its employees through training and study tours to other anti corruption agencies. Employees are the most valuable and critical assets in an organization and require to be constantly equipped with skills and knowledge through training and exchange visits for benchmarking with other anti-corruption agencies which will assist in bridging the performance gaps that would have been identified.
On 13th June 2010, the Commission conducted a study tour to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria. The objective of the visit was to learn and share information, experiences and strategies that are employed in preventing and combating corruption in order to equip officers of the relevant institutions with knowledge and the ability to effectively discharge their responsibilities in contributing to the fight against corruption.
The Commission delegation consisting of HUMPREY MAHIVA (team Leader); JAMES OLOLA; MESHACK ALUDA; LYDIA MANYASI and ELLYJOY BUNDI, held fruitful deliberations with their hosts including a vibrant session with the Attorney General who also doubles as the Minister for Justice at his chambers. Discussions were centred on investigation and prosecution of corruption cases and the relationship between the Attorney General and ICPC and EFCC on the other hand. The Nigerian agencies have prosecutorial powers compared to none by the KACC.
The ICPC Chairman Hon. Justice Emmanuel Ayoola and Members of ICPC hold the KACC with high regard and appreciated the exchange visit since it would not only enhance the cooperation between the two nations but enable each organization to learn from one another. The ICPC regard KACC as an equal and a centre of excellence in Eastern Africa.
The KACC Officers paid a courtesy call to the Kenyan High Commissioner in Abuja updating him on the Commission’s activities and programmes in the fight against corruption.
The Commission plans to have more visits to other anti-corruption agencies in-order to foster better relationships with other agencies but also to learn and share on best practices in the fight against corruption.
